The RWE Group companies

RWE AG

RWE’s operating business is spread over four companies – all acting with a high degree of autonomy in their respective business areas and totally committed to the success of the new RWE. Within the new RWE, the individual Group companies all have different tasks, but one common objective: “Our energy for a sustainable life”. This is what RWE’s approximately 20,000 employees are working towards and they have set an ambitious goal for themselves: to be carbon neutral by 2040.

RWE Renewables GmbH

RWE Renewables, the newest subsidiary of the RWE Group, is one of the world's leading renewable energy companies. With around 3,500 employees, the company has onshore and offshore wind farms, photovoltaic plants and battery storage facilities with a combined capacity of approximately 9 gigawatts. RWE Renewables is driving the expansion of renewable energy in more than 15 countries on four continents. For further growth a net investment budget of €5 billion is available until 2022. When adding in possible partnerships, the medium term investment budget could reach up to €9 billion. The focus is on the Americas, the core markets in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

RWE Generation

With its highly efficient power plants in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands, approximately 3,000 employees at RWE Generation use gas, hard coal, hydro power and biomass to generate electricity. The company’s gas fleet is the third largest in Europe. Which is an excellent starting point, as gas is becoming increasingly important as a bridge to the age of renewables. The company banks on biomass, particularly in the Netherlands – and is converting two coalfired power stations so that they can use this CO2-neutral energy source. RWE also has hydro power plants in many core markets.

RWE Power

RWE Power AG, with headquarters in Essen and Cologne, Germany, is a company of the RWE Group. Its business is lignite-based and nuclear power generation. The Company employs about 11,000 people and operates three opencast lignite mines in the Rhineland area. Lignite production is predominantly used for electricity generation in the Company’s own power stations, but is also processed to make solid fuels and filter materials. In addition, RWE Power manages the operation, decommissioning and dismantling of RWE’s nuclear facilities. The Company’s power stations supply the grid with an overall capacity of around 13 gigawatts.

RWE Supply & Trading

RWE Supply & Trading is the interface between RWE and energy markets around the world. Around 1,600 employees from 40 nations trade electricity, gas, commodities, and CO2 emission certificates. Aided by precise market analyses and guided by high customer orientation, they create innovative energy supply solutions as well as concepts for risk management in industrial companies. The trading company also ensures the commercial optimisation of the RWE power plants, operates storage for natural gas, and markets the renewable energy generated by RWE Renewables.
